Why Akagera National Park?

Akagera National Park is almost unrecognizable today compared to just 20 years ago when it was on the verge of being lost forever. Thanks to continuous conservation efforts & implementing strict anti-poaching laws, the park has become the largest protected wetland in central Africa & a sanctuary for savanna-adapted wildlife in Rwanda.

Experience Akagera is home to the famous Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino as well as over 480 bird species – including the rate, prehistoric-looking shoebill stork.

Most travellers who visit Rwanda for the ultimate adventure - a gorilla trek safari – find that Akagera is an ideal destination to add to their Rwanda itinerary. Combining these destinations will allow guests to experience the best of both worlds – predators & primates!

Activities Safari activities at Akagera are ample. Boat safaris on Lake Rwanyakanzinga is an excellent way to view the area’s aquatic animals & water birds while thrilling game drives & night drives will enable guests to view predators & other land animals.

Guided walking safaris & catch-&-release fishing throughout the year are also offered. Guests who are interested to learn more about the local community can also visit one of the nearby villages.

When To Travel Akagera National Park can be visited throughout the year. The dry season (June to September) is the prime time for watching wildlife in the park. Animals are easier to spot because the bush thins out and wildlife concentrates around the lakes
