Why Madikwe Game Reserve?

The 75,000-hectare Madikwe Private Game Reserve is one of South Africa’s largest Big 5 reserves. Lying on the edge of the Kalahari & close to the Botswana border, Madikwe is home to the coveted Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino – as well as an abundance of other wildlife.

Experience The reserve is - without a doubt - one of the best places in the country to see the rare, endangered African wild dog, a massive drawcard to most safari enthusiasts.

Because Madikwe is privately owned & run, no day visitors are allowed, so guests will experience an intimate & private safari – the way it should be! Off-road driving & night drives are permitted, so guests can expect close-up wildlife encounters & excellent photographic opportunities.

The reserve is malaria-free & is, therefore, the perfect choice for families with young children. Guests can choose from a wide selection of family-friendly safari lodges that offer exciting children’s activities, meals & even babysitting services.

Couples & honeymooners are not overlooked as Madikwe is also home to luxurious lodges – some of which offer private plunge pools & romantic, al fresco dinners.

Activities Visitors get the opportunity to observe Africa’s magnificent creatures in the wild with twice-daily open 4x4 game drives & nature walks with expert-led guides.

Game drives take place twice daily - once in the morning & once in the afternoon & evening so that guests have an opportunity to search for nocturnal animals with a spotlight.

Off-road driving will take you straight into the action & ensure wildlife encounters of the highest standard.

When To Travel Winter (May to September, also known as the dry season) is the best time for wildlife viewing throughout the region. Vegetation thins during this time, so wildlife spotting is easy. April & October are considered shoulder months & are also good for game viewing. During the rainy season, December to March – the bush is lush & it turns into a green paradise with sensational birding & plenty of baby animals – favourite prey items for the many Madikwe predators.
