Why Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro Crater is an ancient volcanic caldera in northern Tanzania that offers some of East Africa’s easiest & most rewarding game viewing.

Experience Home to the coveted Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino – the Ngorongoro Crater delivers an exceptional safari experience, a unique setting & a remarkable number of 30,000 animals – every safari enthusiast’s dream!

The scenery is spectacular, predators are abundant & it is not uncommon to spot the Big 5 in a single day.

Luxurious cliff-top lodges are perched right on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, offering some of the best views in Africa, it not the world. An added benefit of staying near the rim means that you will be first in the queue to drive down to the crater floor each morning – & therefore miss the crowds.

Guests looking for more affordable, yet equally tranquil safari accommodation can head to the nearby town of Karatu, set some 20km south from the crater in the green, rolling hills of the Karatu Highlands. Here, excellent accommodations are often surrounded by working coffee plantations, so guests will have a wide range of activities available – even more so at the rim of the crater.

Activities Visitors to Ngorongoro Crater are spoilt for choice! They can choose between open 4x4 game drives, guided walks with Maasai warriors, mountain biking, bird watching, cultural visits, hot air balloon safaris, picnic lunches on the crater floor & romantic sundowner excursions. Day trips to the nearby Lake Manyara & Olduvai Gorge can also be arranged.

When To Travel Since wildlife remains in the steep-walled crater all year round, visitors will have a great safari experience, regardless of when they travel.

High visitor numbers can be expected during the dry July to September peak season & again during the December to February calving season that follows the November rains. With this in mind, the main April to May rainy season is often considered the best time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater as there are far fewer visitors & the crater is wonderfully lush & green compared to the dusty dry-season landscape.
