Why Matusadona National Park & Lake Kariba?

Matusadona National Park is situated on Lake Kariba – the largest man-made lake in the world & is not only home to the coveted Big 5 but is famous for its prominent elephant & buffalo populations as well as having the greatest concentrations of lions outside of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater.

Experience The park is a wildlife mecca. Healthy numbers of leopards, cheetah, wild dog & spotted hyena can frequently be seen here & if guests are lucky, they may even tick off both black & white rhino.

Matusadona National Park is a fly-in destination & combines easily with a Victoria Falls holiday or a Gonarezhou safari.

Activities Lake Kariba is at the heart of a Matusadona safari & all activities revolve around the rhythm of the lake.

Activities include early morning game drives looking for big cats & other wildlife or leisurely afternoon boat cruises in search of hippos & crocodiles.

The reserve also offers great bird watching & adventurous guests can also enjoy thrilling walking safaris in the company of expert guides & armed rangers.

When To Travel Game viewing in Matusadona National Park is most rewarding in the dry season, between May & October – whether on foot, by boat or in a safari vehicle. The rest of the park dries up, so the animals congregate around the lakeshore in increasing numbers & diversity.

Daily temperatures are mild & sunny, with cold nights from May to August, but you will find hot & sometimes humid temperatures in September & October.

The rains arrive in late November to early December, so Matusadona is largely inaccessible & it becomes more difficult to see animals in the thick grasses. During the wet, summer season (November to April), birdlife is spectacular.

Note that some of the camps close between January & March but reopens again in April.
